Gus McCray, in Oil: An 11x14 Portrait With a Big Story

Some characters don’t fade.

Even years after you’ve watched (or read) Lonesome Dove, Gus McCray has a way of staying with you—equal parts grit and tenderness, humor and heartbreak. I’ve always loved that blend: the strength without the hard edges, the courage that still makes room for softness. That’s what pulled me toward painting him.

This is an 11x14 oil painting on stretched canvas, finished and set into a homemade frame.

Why Gus McCray?

I didn’t set out to paint “a cowboy.” I wanted to paint a presence—the kind that fills a quiet moment without needing to say much.

In the reference photo, Gus is seated under that huge sky, hat brim catching the light, eyes turned off into the distance like he’s listening to something most people miss. There’s a steadiness in him that feels rare. He looks weathered, but not hardened.

That’s the West at its best—quiet, honest, unpretentious.

The painting process

Oil paint is my favorite teacher. It slows me down. It makes me commit.

In this piece, I focused on the details that make a portrait feel alive:

• The planes of the face and the places the light lands

• The warmth in the skin tones against the cool, open sky

• The shape and shadow under the hat brim

• The mustache—iconic, but also surprisingly delicate when you really look at it

And then there’s the setting: the simple horizon line and all that breathing room. I wanted the sky to feel like it goes on forever, because that’s how this story feels—bigger than the frame.

A frame made by hand

I also made the frame myself, and I love what that adds to the piece.

A handmade frame isn’t about perfection. It’s about intention. It says: this wasn’t mass-produced. This was built.

For me, framing by hand is the final act of respect I give a painting. It’s how I finish the story.
